Everted Laryngeal Sacculesan
Everted Laryngeal Saccules is a respiratory condition that occurs when small tissue folds inside the larynx, known as saccules, become swollen and turn outward into the airway, causing breathing difficulties.
This condition is often a part of Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome, commonly seen in short-nosed breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus. Dogs with everted laryngeal saccules may show symptoms such as noisy breathing, snoring, coughing, exercise intolerance, or labored breathing, especially in hot or humid weather.
The problem develops due to chronic airway obstruction and increased effort to breathe, which pulls the saccules into the airway. Early veterinary attention is essential, as untreated cases can lead to severe respiratory distress.
Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the everted saccules and managing other airway abnormalities like elongated soft palate or stenotic nares. Keeping affected dogs at a healthy weight, avoiding excessive heat, and minimising overexertion can help prevent complications. Prompt diagnosis and surgical correction greatly improve airflow and quality of life for dogs suffering from everted laryngeal saccules.
