Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI)

Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) in Dogs is a digestive disorder where the pancreas fails to produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to poor nutrient absorption and weight loss. This condition prevents dogs from properly breaking down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, causing chronic digestive issues.

Common symptoms of EPI include frequent loose or greasy stools, excessive hunger, weight loss despite a good appetite, flatulence, and dull coat condition. Breeds like German Shepherds, Rough Collies, and Chow Chows are more prone to developing this condition due to genetic factors. Diagnosis is confirmed through a blood test measuring trypsin-like immunoreactivity (TLI).

Treatment involves lifelong pancreatic enzyme supplements added to the dog’s food, along with a highly digestible, low-fat diet to improve digestion and nutrient absorption. With proper management and early diagnosis, dogs with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency can live healthy, active lives. Regular vet check-ups, balanced nutrition, and consistent enzyme therapy are essential for maintaining optimal digestive health in affected dogs.
