Glomerulonephritis

Glomerulonephritis in Dogs is a serious kidney disorder caused by inflammation of the glomeruli — the tiny filters within the kidneys that remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. When these filters become damaged due to infections, immune system diseases, or chronic inflammation, the kidneys lose their ability to function properly. This leads to protein loss in urine, increased thirst, frequent urination, and gradual kidney failure if left untreated.

Breeds such as Doberman Pinschers, Cocker Spaniels, and Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers are more prone to developing this condition. Diagnosis is made through urine analysis, blood tests, and sometimes kidney biopsy to confirm the underlying cause. Treatment focuses on controlling the primary disease, reducing protein loss, and supporting kidney function through diet management, blood pressure control, and medications prescribed by a veterinarian.

Early detection and regular monitoring play a key role in slowing progression and improving the dog’s quality of life. With proper care, dogs affected by glomerulonephritis can live comfortably while maintaining better kidney health.
