Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS)

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) in dogs is a group of rare inherited metabolic disorders caused by a deficiency of specific enzymes responsible for breaking down complex sugar molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). When these enzymes are missing or defective, GAGs accumulate inside cells, leading to damage in multiple organs and tissues, including the bones, joints, eyes, heart, and nervous system. Because MPS is genetic, symptoms often appear early in a dog’s life and may progress over time.

Common signs of Mucopolysaccharidosis include abnormal bone growth, joint stiffness, dwarfism, corneal clouding, enlarged liver or spleen, breathing difficulties, and neurological issues. Puppies may show delayed growth, difficulty walking, or facial deformities. The severity of symptoms depends on the type of MPS (Type I, II, III, VI, or VII). Diagnosis typically involves enzyme activity tests, genetic testing, and urine analysis, which detect GAG buildup and identify the specific enzyme deficiency.

While there is no complete cure for MPS, supportive and natural holistic care can improve comfort and quality of life. A nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants (blueberries, spinach), and lean proteins supports cellular and joint health. Supplements like glucosamine, chondroitin, CoQ10, and turmeric may help maintain joint flexibility and reduce inflammation. Gentle physical therapy, massage, and avoiding strenuous activity can also minimize discomfort. For dogs with breathing or heart issues, maintaining a stress-free environment and regular vet checkups are crucial.
